CIFAR Impact Report 2022-2023
Creative Direction | Content Strategy | Visual Storytelling | Publication Design
CIFAR’s annual Impact Report communicates the organization’s achievements, research and activities to its stakeholders. For the 2022–2023 edition, the opportunity was to rethink how that story was told, creating a more focused and accessible publication that put greater emphasis on CIFAR’s research community and its impact.
Rethinking the Publication
The 2022–2023 report represented a shift from previous editions. Rather than trying to document everything that had happened during the year, the content was streamlined to create a more digestible experience for readers.
I worked with the Communications team to translate this new approach into the publication’s visual direction and design, considering how content, imagery, data and layout could work together to make the report easier to navigate and more engaging for its audiences.
A More Human Approach
Photography became central to the visual storytelling.
The report placed greater emphasis on CIFAR’s researchers and community, connecting the organization’s activities and achievements with the people behind the work. The design used imagery, typography, space and a more focused content structure to create a clearer hierarchy and give individual stories and accomplishments room to stand out.
The result was a publication that communicated organizational impact through both information and storytelling while remaining connected to CIFAR’s broader visual identity.
The Result
The redesigned Impact Report provided CIFAR with a more concise and audience-focused way to communicate the organization’s work over the previous year.
By reducing the volume of content and placing greater emphasis on researchers and visual storytelling, the publication shifted the focus from documenting activity to communicating impact.
